Green actions deserve points on the board.

The gap

Good habits fade when nobody's counting.

People recycle, walk, bike, and refill reusable bottles, and get zero feedback or recognition for it. Without visible progress, motivation drains and sustainable habits stay inconsistent.

Who hurtsStudents, young adults, and households trying to live greener; communities that lose participation in recycling and green programmes.
The evidenceNorthumbria University research on digital sustainability tools: personalised feedback, progress tracking, and ongoing encouragement are the key factors in sustaining green habits.
The missing pieceFitness apps solved this years ago with streaks and points. Sustainability never got its scoreboard.

The solution

A scoreboard for everyday green actions.

EcoPoints turns green choices into a game worth playing: check in, earn points, level up, redeem rewards from local partners.

The one-day build

Pure front-end state. Zero risk.

A head start: action logging, points, a progress dashboard, and a partner-rewards view already exist as an early prototype. Hackathon day adds streaks, levels, and the redeem flow. Everything lives in localStorage.

The 3-minute pitch

  1. Hook: "You recycled every week this year. What did you get for it? Nothing. Not even a number."
  2. Log three actions live and watch the points, streak, and level bar move.
  3. Redeem a reward from a local partner and explain the municipality model: engagement for them, recognition for users.

Why it wins

Judges' scorecard.

FeasibilityFront-end state plus localStorage; nothing can break on stage.
ImpactIndirect but broad: habit formation across many behaviours, backed by feedback research.
User-friendlinessCheck-in takes two taps; gamification explains itself.
